About Riyadh and Places to Visit
Riyadh is the capital of Saudi Arabia, located in the heart of the Arabian Peninsula and surrounded by the Ṭuwayq Mountains. The name of this beautiful city comes from the Arabic word “rawda”, which means gardens, this area is in fact characterized by special luxury, and originally the name Riyadh served only to indicate the area where orchids grew in abundance. Today, Riyadh is a very rich city with high skyscrapers. Saudi Arabia owes much of its wealth to oil production and refining, and its reserves are in fact the largest in the world.
Riyadh is indeed a wonderful city. The capital city is home to about 3.5 million people, which is about 20% of the total Saudi population. The main street of the city is the King Fahd Avenue, where the most important companies and organizations in the country are located. Famous monuments such as the Kingdom Centre, Anoud Tower and the Ministry of the Interior overlook this avenue, which is dotted with skyscrapers and shopping malls.
There are over 4,300 mosques in the city. The National Museum of Saudi Arabia boasts truly rare collections and objects as well as archaeological finds from the Stone Age to the birth of Islam. Also worth a visit is the Saudi Royal Air Force Museum, which contains an excellent collection of aircraft and equipment used by the Saudi Air Force. There is also a real citadel in the centre of the city: the Masmak Fortress, built in 1865 and restored in the 1980s. The TV Tower, on the other hand, is, with its height of 170 meters, an excellent observation point to enjoy the surrounding landscape. A few kilometers from the city is one of the largest camel markets in the Middle East and the ruins of Diriyah.
Sporting events are very popular in Riyadh and the city simply buzzes on match days when up to 70,000 fans head to King Fahd’s International Stadium. If you prefer shopping, there are many shopping malls where women can find the best local and imported jewellery, clothing and food.
King Khalid International Airport (RUH) is the major major airport which is located 35 kilometers away from the capital.
